When Love Got Redefined

water and fire split
“Loving like God” is another way of putting something Jesus said: “As I have loved you…”

Romans 5 is perhaps the clearest statement in the scripture as to just how He loved us. Elsewhere we are told, “This is how we know what love is, Jesus Christ laid down his life for us…”.  Romans 5 tells us under what circumstances He did that:

“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.  Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die.  But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!  For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!” Verses 6-10

Jesus Christ laid down His life for his enemies. That’s the measureless love of God. Before His death He made a statement about the greatest love known to man up to the point of His death.

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”  John 15:13

Viewed from the language of a patent examiner, that would be called “the state of the art.” That was “as good as it gets” before Jesus laid down His life. Jesus redefined love at the Cross. Anything short of this redefined love is unworkable, and unsatisfactory for building His Church.

Welcome to the first day of new focus!

Dear Readers,

The first sentence Jay Ferris wrote on LovingLikeGod.com was at the start of 2011.

It was:

  • Welcome to the first day of new focus!

After that, (until the Lord took him home in 2013) he posted regularly and mostly on two revelations he received in the 30+ years of walking with Christ.

These two revelations were:

  • God’s kind of love (i.e. the love that is ‘good for enemies,’ Romans 5:10)
  • Relationships that come from God

To this day these truths are bedrock, unshakeable, and still shining bright.

WE are actually what shakes, if anything. Unexpected storms and temptations can push us off course, causing us to lose our way, and cry out for help.

Lately I’ve had some “course corrects” myself. And one of the most important things I’m convicted of is the need to refocus on God’s Word, and the things that never shake

So with that said, I want to announce that in 2024 there will be a lot more postings here. My goal is to reread and repost an article by Jay every week that pertains to the two revelations above. I’ll aim for Tuesdays (because we’re Tuesday people, of course!¹), will sometimes add personal comments (below the posts), and throw in some unrelated or previously unpublished pieces to spice things up.

That’s all for now! I invite you to join me on this new journey of refocus, add your own comments to the articles, and if they blessed you…please share them with friends.

In Love,

Pamela

When The Lord Takes the Reigns

A short testimonial story by Jay Ferris

One day a president of a small company was trying to help me find parts for a welding project I was neck deep in. While seated on the other side of his desk, I suddenly felt a prompting to share Christ with him.

However, I didn’t feel presentable as the Lord’s representative in the moment. My body was tired. My work clothes were greasy and beat-up. But I was getting no peace. In my inner conversation with the Lord, I finally said, “Okay, but if this will happen, you’re going to have to give me a clear sign.”

We finished our business, his not having been able to locate what I needed but promising to pursue it and get back to me. I stood up to shake his hand when his phone rang. He excused himself to answer it, then, after a moment, he held it away from his ear with a troubled look on his face. I couldn’t hear the voice on the other end of the phone, but, leaning against the door of his office, I was prompted to say, “Oh my people, women rule over them, and children oppress them.”

He reacted as if I had hit him with a baseball bat. He said something very harsh, cut the phone conversation short, and turned to me and asked, “Why did you say that? Where did that come from? Do you know who was on the phone? That was my wife! She and my daughter are having an argument, and trying to involve me. Why did you say that?” He hardly took a breath.

I responded by saying where it came from, Isaiah.

“But how did you know it, and why did you say it?” he asked.

I explained I had come across the verse when I was studying the monetary implications in the Bible. (I was working on my first book then)

He responded, “Please, sit down and tell me more about this!”

He didn’t have to ask twice. But I hadn’t gotten very far when he interrupted. “Would you be willing to speak to my group?”

I had no idea what his group was about, but I said, “Sure.” And soon I left his office with no details on the subject. As far as I figured, he instantly forgot—and after a while, I nearly did too.

But six months later I got a call from him. He explained that he was president of the local chamber of commerce and had been charged with the responsibility of getting the speaker for their annual dinner. Would I be willing to come?

It was quite a lavish affair. My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful supper, and the atmosphere was electric. I spoke for about 45 minutes and sat down. They wouldn’t let me off that easy, however; the question and answer session that followed lasted another hour!

All of this is just to say that, where weapons are concerned, most of my best work has been done when I didn’t have any idea what I was doing. They really are “spiritual” weapons.
